About & legal

Who runs freeweatherapi.org, what happens to your data, and the terms under which the API is offered.

About the project

freeweatherapi.org started in 2023 as a personal project to make weather observations from the Dutch national network usable in home automation dashboards, and grew into a general-purpose API serving roughly 2 billion requests a month. It is run by the Free Weather API Project, a small volunteer association based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, with three active maintainers and a long tail of station owners and data contributors.

Privacy policy

Last updated: 12 February 2026

We run a weather API, and we try to keep the privacy policy in proportion to that.

What we store

Cookies

The API sets no cookies at all. This website uses one session cookie for the community dashboard and no analytics cookies — we count page views from server logs, aggregated and anonymous. No consent banner, because there's nothing to consent to.

GDPR

Our legal bases are legitimate interests (security, rate limiting) and, for registered token holders, performance of a contract. You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your data at any time via privacy@freeweatherapi.org; we respond within 30 days, usually much faster. Because we process so little personal data, we do not use third-party processors. Complaints can be directed to the Dutch Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.

Data you query

Requests contain locations, not people. We do not attempt to identify individuals from queried coordinates, and we do not enrich or resell query logs.

Terms of use

Last updated: 12 February 2026

1. The service

The API is offered "as is", free of charge, without any warranty of availability or accuracy. Weather data can be wrong; don't use it as the sole input for safety-critical decisions.

2. Fair use & rate limits

Anonymous use is limited to 600 requests per minute per IP; community tokens to 10,000; sponsors to 50,000. You agree not to deliberately circumvent these limits (rotating IPs or tokens to hide a single application's traffic), not to mirror the archive wholesale for republication, and not to resell raw API responses as a competing weather API. Light caching is encouraged; aggressively polling /v1/current every second for a city is not. Persistent offenders get throttled first and blocked second, always with notice where we can.

3. Attribution

API data is licensed CC BY 4.0. Display “Weather data by freeweatherapi.org” (linked) anywhere the data appears in your product. The full sources list, per-country exceptions and ready-to-paste credit lines are on the attribution page.

4. Availability

We target 99.9% monthly uptime and have delivered 99.98% over the last four quarters, but there is no SLA — this is a community project. If your business needs contractual guarantees, consider sponsoring so we can afford them.

5. Changes

We'll announce breaking changes at least 90 days in advance on the changelog and the forum. Availability history and incident postmortems are published on the status page.
